Lisa James is a Portland-based folk-pop-Americana artist whose music centers on love, connection, and emotional honesty. Raised in her mom’s violin studio, Lisa grew up surrounded by music. That upbringing helped shape her belief that music is medicine. It is something that helps us feel, heal, and connect.
A singer and guitarist, Lisa has been performing for over a decade, creating warm, family-friendly shows that invite people of all ages to feel included. She often brings small percussion instruments for kiddos to play, turning shows into a shared experience. She writes about falling in love, loss, and just making it through the day. She believes that every song is a love song, even ones that come from grief.
Lisa studied music and recording at Portland Community College through its Professional Music and Music and Sonic Arts programs, and was the first woman hired to teach Recording Technology I–III. She brought the same care and commitment to her teaching as she does to her music. She strives to create space for people to grow, learn, and feel heard.
Inspired by artists who lead with kindness (she credits Maria from The Sound of Music as a major influence), Lisa sees her role as a musician as less about the spotlight and more about building moments. Every show is a moment where people can feel connected to each other through silliness and music.
